We are just 29 days from the New Year when a whole lot of 'resolving' will occur worldwide. Talk is cheap, however. One of the biggest obstacles to fulfilling New Year Resolutions is the transitory nature of Resolutions. They are often made in haste without any forethought. All too often the wrong resolution is chosen due to lack of clarity; and folks choose far too many resolutions. Too often we treat them as small projects that we can simply add to the 'To Do List', complete them, then cross them off. The problem is that most Resolutions never get anywhere close to completion because they are never adopted as permanent lifestyle choices. They never become permanent habits.
I highly recommend several key strategies for making and keeping resolutions: 1) Make just one resolution, then tackle it one day at a time for one year; 2) Consider a LifeTime Resolution List – a 'how to' can be found here at I Resolve To . . . 3) Make every day New Year's Day; every day is a brand new opportunity to achieve success, both large and small (maybe we should call our Resolutions "New Day Resolutions").
'Daily' is truly a primary ingredient for success. I coined the word 'Daily Resolves' to illustrate the importance of habitual practice. Whatever you want to achieve, you need to do it every day. Make it a habit. Resolve persistently. My trademarked motto is: I Resolve To . . . Achieve My New Year Resolutions, One Resolution, One Day At A Time For One Year! And for good reason. To achieve a dream, or a resolution you need to keep it front and center every single day.
With that as an introduction – in an effort to help folks to resolve persistently in 2014 – I am running my 'Best Of' columns shared since I founded I Resolve To . . . in 2005. Make Each Day Count By Making Each Day New Year's Day!
If you truly want to make and keep your New Year resolutions, why not make each and every day New Year's Day? Why not make each day count as a day filled with hope, renewal and gratitude? God willing, each one of us will get a brand new day tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that. Why not be grateful for all that we are, all that we have, and show it by using each new day as a gift, and a chance to pursue a cherished dream? Why not use each day as an opportunity to achieve, create, learn, do, succeed? As a starting point, consider this simple, common sense I Resolve To Formula For Success:
Cherished Dream + Determined Resolution + Daily Resolves = Achievement, Fulfillment, Success!
If you're already working hard to achieve a dream, and you have a plan that will get you to the finish line, how is it going? Are you making steady progress? Are you pushing your dream forward one small step at a time, one day at a time? Are you enjoying the journey? If the answer is 'YES', then your dream is a centerpiece of your life, a top priority, and it's adding value and reward to your life. You're making each day count. Congratulations! Alternatively, if you've been procrastinating you can never regain the time you've lost, but you can make the most of the time you have left! Don't squander any more of your precious time, it passes far too quickly as it is. If you're 'stalled', sitting in 'park', waiting for a moment of inspiration or a burst of energy, maybe it's time to end the 'Someday, Someday, Someday Syndrome'. Stop waiting and get busy with your dream today, not 'someday'. Without a doubt, each one of must tackle obligations each day, many of which aren't much fun. They are duties that we must handle because they're part of living responsible, healthy, happy lives. That's why it's so important to pursue our dreams at the same time we tackle our daily obligations.
Our dreams lend inspiration, fun, and fulfillment to our lives. They help us to grow and build self esteem. They make us happy. They can make others happy too, depending on the dream. Best of all pursuing our dreams 'today' enables us to live full lives 'now', and when all is said and done – when our time here on earth is at an end – we won't depart with regret for all those things we wish we had done! Make good use of your time, today. Make each day New Year's Day, a day of hope, renewal and gratitude. Make each day count.
Don't waste another day. Don't simply respond to the 'In Box' everyday. Make some time for you, your dreams, resolutions, and goals. Even if you fail occasionally, you will also succeed. Don't let fear of failure or disappointment hold you back. Those lessons learned and those 'wins' can fuel the fire of victories to come!
